VALDOSTA —
Armstrong Atlantic State University has announced its latest induction class for the Armstrong Atlantic State University Athletic Hall of Fame. Among the six inductees and one Service Citation award winner is Valdosta native Nikki Garland, who ran cross county and track and field with the Pirates.
Garland will be inducted on March 29 at a ceremony at Armstrong Atlantic State University. She will be joined by women's tennis player Luisa Cowper, men's golfer Chris Epperson, volleyball player Sarah Haynes, softball player Annie Sells and men's tennis player Christian Witt. Former Armstrong president Dr. Thomas Z. Jones has also been honored with the Service Citation Award.
"Our Hall of Fame has a strong tradition of inducting deserving
student-athletes and this class is no exception," Armstrong Director of Athletics Lisa Sweany said. "I commend the committee on an excellent job in selecting this year's class and look forward to meeting the newest inductees, as well as all Hall of Fame members, in our March induction ceremony."
Garland was the most decorated Armstrong women's cross country and track athlete in school history, runing for the Pirates from 1997 to 2001. Garland was a four-time All-Peach Belt and NCAA All-Region honoree, qualifying for nationals individually as a
freshman in 1997. Despite the Pirates not sponsoring a track and field team, Garland competed individually and earned NCAA DII Track All-American honors as a junior in 1999 running the 800 meters.
