VALDOSTA —
After leading the Valdosta State Blazers to 10 straight wins and the Division II national championship, David Dean was named the American Football Coaches’ Association’s Division II Coach of the Year on Tuesday.
After starting the year with a 2-2 record, the Blazers reeled off 10 straight wins, including a 35-7 win over Winston-Salem State in the national championship game, to claim the school’s third national championship since 2004.
Under Dean’s guidance — he also calls the offensive plays — the Blazers set a school-record with 40 rushing touchdowns and an average of 218.9 rushing yards per game. The Blazers finished just 35 points shy of the school-record for points in a season, scoring 582 in 2012.
Dean, who was also named AFCA Coach of the Year after leading the Blazers to the national championship in 2007, now owns a 54-17 record as the VSU coach, including a 4-0 mark in the 2012 postseason.
