Lanier County hammers Trojans, 10-0

QUITMAN — The Lanier County baseball team won its second-straight game Tuesday night, with a commanding 10-0 victory over the Brooks County Trojans.

Senior pitcher Buster Allen had an impressive outing for the Bulldogs, striking out five batters in a complete game shutout in which he allowed just two hits. Allen was also four for four at the plate, driving in a run and scoring another.

"Hopefully this will be the norm for him," said Lanier County Head Coach Kenny Yanzetich. "He's a senior who played a heck of a ball game for us tonight. He's worked real hard this offseason and were trying to get him to be a leader for our ball club."

With the loss, Brooks County has lost the last five meetings against Lanier County.

"I'm looking for better things in the future. Were going to have some bumps,” Shipman said. “I expect once we get acclimated to where everybody needs to be and what they need to do were going to be fine.”

While Allen dominated, so did the Bulldogs’ offense, which roughed up Brooks County starting pitcher Jacon Lawson.

The sophomore Lawson quickly found himself in a bases loaded jam with no outs in the top of the first inning. With runners in scoring position, the Bulldogs capitalized, bringing all three runners across home plate to take an early 3-0 lead.

Lanier County was aided by a wild pitch that went behind the catcher and two base hits that drove in runs.

The bottom of the first inning was one of the very few opportunities for the Trojans to score runs. But, Allen struck out the last two batters of the side, leaving the bases loaded for Brooks County.

The second inning wasn't any better for the Trojans, as the Bulldogs struck for two more runs in the inning, grabbing a 5-0 lead. In the inning, two runners reached base after being hit by pitchers, both of whom later came around to score.

With the 5-0 lead, Allen continued to cruise, getting the Trojans in 1-2-3 fashion in the bottom of the inning, two of which came by strikeouts.

Lanier County freshman Christian Crosby helped build to the lead in the third inning, driving in a run. He drove in another run later in the game.

Shortstop Avery Taylor pushed Lawson back into another tough situation when he singled a blooper into the outfield that loaded the bases for Lanier County in the third inning.

Lawson again failed to get out of the bind, giving up a walk to left fielder Brandon Carter that forced in a run. From there, Lawson hit third basemen Austin Carr, which gave up another run.

Following the hit-by-pitch, Shipman replaced the defeated pitcher with Daniel Hodum. Hodum gave up one more run before the Trojans got the third out of the inning.

The Trojans started the top of the fourth inning trailing 9-0.

In the fourth inning, Allen aided his own cause, starting the inning off with a single. Taylor later drove in Allen, making the score 10-0.

Brooks County tried to rally in the fifth inning, when Allen issued two walks that put two runners on base. That chance was squandered in a hurry, with Allen getting the necessary outs to secure the win.
