CECIL —
On Saturday night, there will be a lot of racing taking place at South Georgia Motorsports Park.
Both the 1/2 mile paved oval race track and the 1/4 mile all-concrete dragstrip will be filled with racing action. The dragstrip is hosing Happy Hauntings III, while the race track hosts the inaugural Mobley Gin Cotton Brawlloween. The gates open at 4:30 p.m. Racing starts around 6 p.m., and lasts until the final race is done. Tickets are $15 per person, with children 10 and under admitted free, and include admission to both the race track and the drag strip.
There will be different classes of cars racing on Saturday, as well as drag racing in multiple classes.
“It’s going to be a little bit of everything,” SGMP general manager Tim Fleming said. “(On the dragstrip) we’re going to have jet cars and (drag racing). (On the race track) we’re going to have late model trucks, which haven’t been here (in several years), we’re going to have a 40-lap hobby stock race. ... We’re going to have the race ’em, wreck ’em events.”
The jet cars are cars with old military jet engines in them. The two cars have a train motif — they’re called the Cannonball Express and the Chattanooga Choo-Choo.
“Our (jet) cars are really geared up for family entertainment,” said K.C. Jones, who drives the Cannonball Express. “They’re hard core racing cars — they’ll run 240 miles per hour in 1/4 mile, probably in the six second zone. But with a train motif. ... When they come up to the starting line, with our burner pops, it’s more like, ‘Chug, chug, chug.’ Everyone says it sounds like a real old steam locomotive taking off. ... They’re pretty spectacular to watch.”
There will also be a number of Halloween activities for children in attendance.
“We’re going to have Halloween contests for the kids,” Fleming said. “We’re going to do a haunted house in the (track’s) suites. We’re going to do bounce houses for the kids. Just a lot of stuff going on for the kids. (We’ll also have) trick or treating for the kids.” South Georgia Motorsports Park is located on U.S. 41 near Cecil.
