The Valdosta girls’ basketball team’s playoff run came to an end Wednesday night, as the Lady Wildcats lost 57-56 to Langston Hughes in overtime in the Class 6A state quarterfinals.
The Lady Wildcats trailed 32-22 at halftime, but rallied in the third quarter, outscoring Langston Hughes 18-8 and tying the score at 40-40 heading into the fourth quarter. The teams were still tied, 49-49, at the end of regulation. But the Lady Panthers outscored VHS 8-7 in overtime, and came away with the win.
Stormm Phillips led the Lady Wildcats with 24 points and 10 rebounds on Wednesday. Destiny Covert scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
VHS hurt itself by going 3 for 11 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter.
Valdosta ends its season at 23-6. It was the Lady Wildcats’ first trip to the quarterfinals since 2001. The 23 wins are the most for a Valdosta girls basketball team this century.
In other 6A girls quarterfinal games, North Gwinnett beat Alpharetta 55-41 and Norcross defeated Cherokee 76-43. Tift County’s girls will host North Cobb today at 6 p.m. in the other quarterfinal game.
The boys’ quarterfinals will be played today. In the 6A quarterfinals, top-ranked Tift County will host North Cobb, Brunswick will take on Hillgrove, Peachtree Ridge will battle Wheeler and Berkmar will play Norcross.
