SOUTHAVEN, Miss. —
The Valdosta-Lowndes County Parks and Recreation Authority’s 8-year All-Star team, the Valdosta Blazers, split a pair of games on Day 1 of the Dizzy Dean World Series in Southaven, Miss.
The Blazers dropped their first game, 11-3, but bounced back to record a commanding 16-1 victory in the afternoon game.
“The bats showed up tonight,” said head coach Dan Kerrigan. “What we didn’t have this morning, was that we had some leftovers from this morning and that helped in the 16-1 win.”
With the game two victory, the Blazers remain alive and will play today at 5 p.m. E.T. (4 p.m. central).
The Blazers weren’t far from winning the opening game of the day against the No. 1 seed out of Florida; they led until the fifth inning. In the fifth, the Blazers allowed seven runs and then another in the sixth inning.
“They didn’t really like us until the fifth inning,” Kerrigan said. “And then after that we didn’t like them too much.”
In the second game, the Blazers had no problems scoring runs, pounding out the 16 runs in all kinds of way.
“Game two, that was one-sided there,” said Kerrigan of his team’s winning-effort.
In game two, four Blazers recorded multiple hits and three other Blazers each added a hit with an RBI. Lamonte Lindon had three hits with six runs batted in, Dan Kerrigan had three hits and three RBIs, Wyatt Crosby had two hits and three RBIs and Mason Steel had two hits with two RBIs.
To go along with the explosive offense, Kerrigan said the Blazers defense was just as impressive on the defensive side, especially considering the firmness of the field.
In the game one loss, Kerrigan and Crosby each had two hits and a RBI.
