Blazer soccer, volleyball teams prevail on Sunday

MONTEVALLO, Ala. — Valdosta State’s women’s soccer team bounced back from Friday’s loss, and defeated Montevallo 3-1 on Sunday.

Emily Cooper scored a goal just five minutes into the match, and Kim Caitlin Alderman and Rebecca Miller scored goals in the final six minutes to help the Blazers improve to 6-1 this season.

The Blazers wasted little time getting on the scoreboard Sunday. In the fifth minute, Arielle Sabina sent a corner kick into the box, and Cooper put the ball in the goal with a header to give Valdosta State the early lead.

The score remained 1-0 until the final minutes of the match.

In the 85th minute, Miller passed to Alderman, who scored to give Valdosta State a 2-0 lead.

Montevallo answered, as Jade Pennock set up Nicole Johnston for the lone Falcons goal of the match just three and a half minutes after Alderman’s goal.

But with 25 seconds left on the clock, Miller put the game away with an unassisted goal. Miller leads the Blazers with four goals and three assists.

Olivia Mills made three saves on the day for Valdosta State. The VSU offense took a barrage of shots at Montevallo goalkeeper Kaitlin Thomas, finishing with 16 shots and five on goal.

Valdosta State’s next game will be a Gulf South Conference match at 7 p.m. Thursday at West Georgia.
