Charbeneau leads Lowndes to another win

VALDOSTA — Lowndes senior cross country runner Megan Charbeneau finished first overall at the Westover Invitationals with a time of 18:36 to lead the Lowndes girls to a first place finish.

The boys team finished 12th out of 47 schools, despite being without David Jones and Eli Gilmore, who were out due to SAT testing, and James McLemore, who was sidelined with an ankle injury.

Charbeneau finished first out of 243 female runners. Her teammates also had solid showings.

Allison Peters finished fourth overall with a time of 19:01, Jacki Pinkerton finished eighth with a time of 19:20 and Ashley Powell finished 19th overall with a time of 20:17.

Despite the absence of key members, the varsity boys’ team ran well, too. Sophomore Jaden Long finished 20th overall, out of a field of 329, with a time of 16:38. Freshman Chance Roe finished 51st overall with a time of 17:24 and Tyler Thurman also finished under the 18-minute mark.

 The Lowndes varsity girls’ cross country team is currently ranked fourth in the state and will compete for the Class 6A state championship Nov. 10 in Carrollton.

The junior varsity teams also had solid showings. The JV girls finished third and the boys finished fourth.

In the Viking Runners Club, which is the Lowundes County Running Club comprised of kids ages 10-15, 10-year-old Kelsey Morse (12:54), 10-year-old Eryn Wilkey (13:56), 12-year-old Destiny Roe (14:41) and 13-year-old Katelyn Stecz (14:50), all from Pine Grove Middle School, were the top middle school female runners from the area.

The top middle school boys finishers were: Daniel Swilly,13,  from Lowndes Middle, with a time of 12:16, and Steven Gross,15, with a time of 12:15.

Other runners are Nic Christie from Pine Grove Middle, Marc Christie,10, Savanah Stacks from Pine Grove Middle finished 36th with a time of 16:20 and Mackenzie Morse from Pine Grove Middle finished 27th with a time of 15:31.

All these kids ran three of the five meets with the Lowndes High School varsity teams. They ran in the middle school race, which is two miles in distance.

Overall, there were 70 middle school boys in the event and over 80 middle school girls.
