Blazer golf tied for 10th in Columbus

COLUMBUS — Valdosta State’s golf team shot a first round 304 and is tied for 10th at 20-over-par at the AFLAC/Cougar Invitational at the par-71, 6,515-yard Country Club of Columbus Monday.

The 304 left the Blazers 18 strokes behind tournament leader Florida Southern, which shot a two-over 286 to open the tournament. Delta State was second at 289, while host Columbus State was third at 10-over-par. Georgia College shot a 296 to stand fourth, while North Alabama was a stroke behind at 297. Lander shot a 298 to stand sixth, while Coker shot a 299 and Clayton State a 301.

Queen’s bested VSU by a single stroke for ninth, while UNC-Pembroke and West Georgia also shot a 304. The remainder of the field included Georgia Southwestern (305), Carson-Newman (306), Florida Tech (309) and Saint Leo (314).

Clarke Hendrick paced Valdosta State in the first round with a four-over 75 to tie for 23rd, while Wheaton Hall and Nate Anderson were a stroke behind and tied for 36th. Abdul Sihag shot a 77 to tie for 50th, while Austin Graham rounded out the squad with a 78 and is tied for 57th. Collin Ho played as an individual and also shot a 78.

The second round of play was scheduled for Monday, but due to a two-hour weather delay, was not completed. Valdosta State was two-under through the first eight holes of play in the round, and had moved up to sixth. Three of the five Blazers playing on the team were one-under par when play was suspended on Monday.

The tournament concludes today.
