VALDOSTA —
The annual American Cancer Society Golf Tournament of Hope wrapped up Friday at Stone Creek Golf Club.
During the three-day tournament, 54 teams participated, and they helped raise a significant amount of money for the American Cancer Society.
“We had a great tournament,” tournament director Ashley Paulk said. “We had great participation. ... We had a lot of help this year.”
The tournament was a four-man scramble. Four-man teams played an 18-hole round on one of the tournament’s three days.
Four teams failed to turn in their scorecards, so no winners were announced on Friday. The winners will be recognized after all of the scorecards are collected.
The lowest score in the first flight belonged to the team of Blake McLeod, Bart Bosch, Kathi Bair and Jake Purvis, who were representing Valdosta State. They shot a 48.
Three teams shot a 49 in the first flight: Guardian Bank’s No. 1 team (Freddy Steedley, Bryan Almand, Charles McLeod and Nicky Balanis), Auto Transfers (Mike Warren, Luke Bailey, Jonathan Byers and Bubba Bailey) and Langdale Industries (Chad Smith, Bernie Armstrong, Randy Terrell and Carroll Griffin).
The leader in the second flight was the AFWM, LLC team (Brian Priest, Blake Williams, Neil Johnson and Cass Burch), which shot a 46.
The teams from Client Tell (Pat Sullivan, Chris Williams, Chaz Bowden and Kyle Elder) and Lowndes Electric (Paulk, J.D. Yeager, Joey Wisenbaker and Thomas Stuart) both shot a 49.
The third flight leader was the Pinnacle Contractors team (Joe Pritchard, Mike Allen, Ashley Tye and Kevin Beals), which shot a 46. The Kentucky Fried Chicken team (Tim Harris, Owen Harris, Mark Ferguson and Rick Koehmstedt) was second with a 51.
Josh Ward and Ronnie Chancey won awards for having the longest drives on the 12th hole. Billy Smith won a prize for being closest to the pin on the eighth hole.
All of the proceeds from the tournament will go to the American Cancer Society, an organization that donates a lot of money and resources towards the fight to end cancer.
“ACS donates over $100 million a year to research. Research is the main way that we’re going to be able to navigate and follow our mission to eliminate cancer,” Ashley Braswell, the Lowndes County Community Manager of the American Cancer Society, said earlier this month. “Having a golf tournament that raises $30,000 is a huge help, because whether that funnels through research and clinical trials or research in developing new drugs or new treatments, all of it is coming back to our community.”
“The statistics on cancer are getting better,” Paulk added. “(There’s more) research and cures. ... We’re gaining (in the fight against cancer).”
