The Greg Reid era at Florida State has officially come to an end.
Reid, a former Lowndes Viking, was dismissed from the FSU football team Wednesday morning by head coach Jimbo Fisher after violating team rules.
It is unclear if Reid’s July 10 arrest in Valdosta for driving on a suspended license and possession of marijuana are related to the dismissal or if it is due to a string of negative events dating back to the start of last season.
“I appreciate everything the FSU community has done for me, and I wish the best for the program,” Reid said in a radio interview with “The Jeff Cameron Show” on 97.9 FM in Tallahassee. “I’m a good person, but I’ve made some dumb mistakes.”
While succeeding on the field, Reid often found trouble and made negative headlines while a member of Florida State’s team. In 2011, Reid was suspended one game for violating team rules. He was also arrested for lying to police when being questioned about the whereabouts of his scooter. Those charges were later dropped.
Last month’s arrest in Valdosta was his second arrest in less than a year. Reid had yet to be punished by Fisher for last month’s arrest, as the Seminoles’ head coach was reviewing the facts of the case.
Reid will be arraigned in court for the July charges on Sept. 5.
With one year of eligibility remaining at the college level and the need to find a new university to play at this season, the question has turned to where will Reid play this season?
Many have speculated Reid would land at Valdosta State due to the university’s location to his home in Lowndes County.
“As far as we know, Greg Reid is still enrolled at Florida State, we have not been notified that he has been released,” Valdosta State head coach David Dean said in a release.
Others have speculated Reid might land at West Georgia in Carollton, as Reid’s former high school teammate Kelly Dawsey is the team’s starting cornerback and the school’s first-class facilities for the Division II level.
No matter what team gets Reid, they will be getting a playmaker that comes with a big bag of off-the-field issues to go along with his talent on the field.
Coming out of Lowndes High School, Reid was a five-star prospect and was rated as the No. 2 overall cornerback by Rivals.com.
In his first game at the college level, Reid exploded onto the scene when he retuned his first-ever punt for a touchdown against Miami in front of a nationally televised audience.
He finished the 2009 season as the Division I-FBS leader in punt return average at 18.4 yards per return.
In 12 games last season with the Seminoles, Reid recorded 32 tackles, two interceptions and had 32 punt returns, of which went for a touchdown.
Following his junior season, Reid contemplated a possible jump to the NFL, but decided to return to FSU to finish his degree and improve his draft stock.
Returning for his senior season, Reid needed just 313 more punt return yards to break Deion Sanders’ all-time school record. He was expected to surpass that mark this season. He was named to the preseason All-ACC team at last week’s ACC Kickoff and has been referred to by many as the ACC’s best punt returner.
