AMERICUS —
Valdosta State snagged its third victory of the season with a 67-51 win over Georgia Southwestern on Saturday night.
Senior Brittney Nelson completed her second double-double of the season to keep VSU’s streak of double-doubles going. Kamyia Smith notched one in the opener.
Nelson finished with 12 points and an eye-popping 21 rebounds, while adding five assists. Smith, however, led the Lady Blazers in scoring with 16 points, and went a perfect 6 for 6 from the free throw line.
Brooke Satterfield was just behind Smith with 15 points. Satterfield gave VSU its only production from beyond the arc, going 3 of 6.
Freshman Courtney Sprague joined Nelson as playmakers for the squad with four assists. Kourtnee Williams added three assists and 11 points. Nine of those points came from the free throw line.
While four Lady Blazers scored in double figures, the VSU defense held Georgia Southwestern to just two double-digit scorers. Shaniece Sheffield scored 10 points off the bench, while Jasmine McSwain went for 18 points and nine rebounds.
Valdosta State returns home to face Albany State at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
