VALDOSTA —
The Valdosta High football team had a solid showing this week at the Colquitt County 7-on-7 passing tournament in Moultrie.
The Wildcats finished the two-day event with an 8-2 record and fell in the quarterfinal round against Warren Central (Ind.). Valdosta was undefeated (5-0) in pool play on Thursday.
Regardless of the outcome, Valdosta head coach Rance Gillespie was extremely pleased with his team’s showing in Moultrie.
“Our kids played really well,” Gillespie said.
Among the teams in the tournament were Valdosta and Colquitt County, both of whom are expected to contend for the Region 1-AAAAAA championship this season, along with Camden County and Lowndes.
Altogether, 14 or 15 teams competed in the tournament, said Gillespie. Teams came from various states, including Alabama, Florida, Georgia and Indiana.
“There was a lot of good competition out there,” Gillespie said.
The Wildcats were busy this week. Prior to arriving in Moultrie, Valdosta participated in Cario’s 7-on-7 passing league. Gillespie said many of the younger players competed in that league and no score was kept.
The Wildcats officially begin fall camp Wednesday and can begin contact drills Aug. 1.
Valdosta’s season opener is Sept. 1 against North Augusta (S.C.). The game will be played at North Gwinnett High School in Suwanee.
