GSGA Junior Sectional tees off at VCC

VALDOSTA — The 39th annual Georgia State Golf Association Junior Sectional Challenge Match will tee off this morning at the Valdosta Country Club.

Play begins this morning at 9 a.m. and will continue throughout the morning. The two-day tournament concludes tomorrow.

There will be two different divisions for the event. Golfers will compete in either the two-day 36-hole tournament or the nine-hole division. 104 golfers (20 girls, 84 boys) will compete in the 36-hole event and 47 golfers will make-up the field in the nine-hole division.

There are several local area youth participating in the event. In the 36-hole division, Bryant Thagard and Jake Lastinger of Valdosta will compete in the 16-17-year-old age group; Jake Parris of Valdosta will compete in the 14-15-year-old age group and Luukas Alakulppi and Dave Mathis of Valdosta will compete in the 12-13-year-old age group.

The Junior Sectional Program is open to male and female juniors under 18 years of age.

Participants must not have reached their 18th birthday on or before the first Junior Sectional Program event and must be residents of Georgia and play at a GSGA Member Club.  

The top five places in each age group of the Boys Division will receive medals. The top three places in both age groups of the Girls Division will receive trophies.



Straka twins to compete in USGA Qualifier

Sepp and Sam Straka, twin brothers that guided the Lowndes golf team to a Class 5A state championship in 2011, will compete in the United State Golf Assocation U.S. Amateur Qualifer at the Piedmont Driving Club Tuesday and Wednesday.

Sepp is paird with Drew Czuchry and Bill Kennerly of Alpharetta in the 8 a.m. group. Sam is paired with Jaskon Coolik of Atlanta and Karl Macalincag of Ackworth and will tee off at 1: 15 p.m.

The Straka brothers are currently sophomore members of the golf team at the University of Georgia.

    That wasn’t the case in the Late Model division, as Valdosta's Gene Ross drove to victory once again, but not without some close competition from Steven Roberts who came in second.
    In the Limited Late Model class, it was another win for Cole Exum, with Gene Maine finishing second in the NAPA Auto Parts special.
