VALDOSTA —
The American Cancer Society’s annual golf tournament began on Wednesday afternoon at Stone Creek Golf Club.
The 27th annual American Cancer Society Golf Tournament of Hope presented by Cass Burch, a four-man scramble golf tournament, continues today and Friday at Stone Creek.
More than 50 teams have signed up to play on one of the tournament’s three days. Each team will play an 18-hole round. There will be prizes given out to the teams with the lowest scores in each of the three flights.
Prizes will also be awarded to the golfer who puts their tee shot closest to the pin on the eighth hole of Stone Creek, and for the golfer who hits the longest drive on the 14th hole.
If a golfer hits a hole in one on the fifth hole, they will win a car from Cass Burch.
All of the proceeds from the tournament will go to the American Cancer Society, an organization that donates a lot of money and resources towards the fight to end cancer.
“ACS donates over $100 million a year to research. Research is the main way that we’re going to be able to navigate and follow our mission to eliminate cancer,” Ashley Braswell, the Lowndes County Community Manager of the American Cancer Society, said earlier this month. “Having a golf tournament that raises (around) $30,000 is a huge help, because whether that funnels through research and clinical trials or research in developing new drugs or new treatments, all of it is coming back to our community. ... I would say it is an immense need and help to have that money.”
Team scores will not be released until the tournament is completed on Friday.
