VALDOSTA —
Next week, the American Cancer Society will be holding its annual golf tournament in Valdosta.
The 27th annual American Cancer Society Golf Tournament of Hope presented by Cass Burch will be held July 25-27 at Stone Creek Golf Club.
The cost to play in the four-man scramble tournament is $500 for a foursome or $125 per player. The cost includes greens fees, lunch, snacks and beverages. Teams will play an 18-hole round on one of the tournament’s three days.
All of the proceeds from the tournament will go to the American Cancer Society, an organization that donates a lot of money and resources towards the fight to end cancer.
“ACS donates over $100 million a year to research. Research is the main way that we’re going to be able to navigate and follow our mission to eliminate cancer,” said Ashley Braswell, the Lowndes County Community Manager of the American Cancer Society. “Having a golf tournament that raises $30,000 is a huge help, because whether that funnels through research and clinical trials or research in developing new drugs or new treatments, all of it is coming back to our community. ... I would say it is an immense need and help to have that money.”
“You won’t find a family that hasn’t been touched by cancer,” longtime tournament chairman Ashley Paulk has often said.
Braswell said that progress is being made in the fight against cancer.
“Within the last six months, we’ve gone from one in three being diagnosed with cancer to one in four,” she said. “This tournament is helping to create more birthdays.”
Any amateur golfer may participate in the tournament. Teams will be split into three flights based on the lowest USGA handicap index of their team members.
There will be prizes given out to the top finishing teams.
Prizes will also be awarded to the golfer who puts their tee shot closest to the pin on the eighth hole of Stone Creek and for the golfer who hits the longest drive on the 14th hole. If a golfer hits a hole in one on the fifth hole, they will win a car from Cass Burch.
There are still sponsorship opportunities available for the tournament, including hole sponsorships.
For more information on the tournament, to sign up for the tournament or to be a sponsor, contact Lisa Bostik at Valdosta Electric Company at (229) 242-3306.
