VALDOSTA —
The state sectional track meets were held Saturday throughout the state. Lowndes and Valdosta competed in the Class AAAAA East Sectional at Tift County High School, while Cook and Brooks County competed in the Class AA West Sectional at Greater Atlanta Christian School in Lilburn.
Participants that finished inside the top eight of their respective events qualified for the state meets. The girls’ state meet will be held this weekend in Albany, with the boys’ meet being held the following weekend in Jefferson.
Lowndes’ Jacki Pinkerton claimed first place in the girls’ 800-meter run with a finals time of 2:19.20, edging Brookwood’s Quandra Shanks by .08 seconds. Megan Charbeneau was second in the 3200-meter run with a time of 11:43.22. Charbeneau also finished seventh in the 1600-meter run.
Valdosta’s Donjhae Jones with a distance of 38-07, while Lowndes’ Alex Godfrey finished sxith in the event. Jones also finished second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.67 seconds, and third in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 44.77 seconds.
Valdosta’s Zakirra McKinnon finished fifth in the 100-meter hurdles, and seventh in the 300-meter hurdles.
Valdosta’s Stormm Phillips finished first in the long jump with a distance of 18 feet. Phillips finished fourth in the girls 200-meter dash, and sixth in the 400-meter. Phillips’ teammate Jalissa Hall finished seventh in the 100-meter dash and eighth in the 200-meter dash.
The Valdosta girls’ 4X400-meter relay team finished third with a time of 3:58.25, finishing behind champion Grayson, followed by Parkview and Mill Creek. Lowndes finished seventh in the 4X100 event with a finals time of 49.75.
Valdosta’s Edra Gipson finished second in the boys’ 100-meter dash with a time of 10.52. Event champion Tyreek Hill of Coffee set a new state-record with a time of 10.32, breaking a record that stood for 12 years. Gipson also finished third in the 200-meter dash.
Lowndes’ Devonte Watts finished first in the boys’ 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.37, while teammate Kenneth Moore finished sixth in the event. Watts also finished sixth in the 300-meter hurdles.
In team events, the Valdosta boys’ 4X100-meter relay team finished first with a time of 41.81. Lowndes’ 4X400-meter relay team finished fifth.
In field events, Valdosta’s Nelson Herring finished fourth in triple jump, while Lowndes Stacey Wright finished sixth in the shot put
Class AA results — Greater Atlanta Christian School
Cook’s Antwanisha Hall finished second in Section two of the girls’ 300-meter hurdles with a time of 49.02 held at Greater Atlanta Christian School in Liliburn.
Brooks County’s Dyskeilka Ray finished first in Flight one of the girls’ triple jump, while Cook’s Lakeyda Zackery finished second in Flight two. Cook’s Shanequa Carnegia finished fourth in Flight one of the Shot Put.
On the boys’ side, Brooks County Chris Jones finished first in Section one of the boys 200-meter dash with a time of 21.88.
Justin McCormick of Cook finished fourth in Section two of the 110-meter boys’ hurdles with a time of 15.78.
In field events, Brooks County’s DeJuan Miley finished second in Flight two in Long Jump, while Cook’s Anthony McRaw finished first in Flight two in Triple Jump.
In team events, Brooks County’s 4X100 team of Chris Jones, Deric Herring, Damion Cobb and Martavius Brooks finished first.
