VSU fraternity to host softball tournament to benefit Addison Seacrist

VALDOSTA — Delta Chi, a fraternity at Valdosta State University, will host the 2013 Joshua Dykes Memorial Softball Tournament at Freedom Park in Valdosta on Saturday.

This year, though, all proceeds of the event will benefit four-year-old Addison Seacrist, who was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia with positive Philadelphia chromosome in September.

“We found (Addison) through Zack Dykes; his brother is Joshua Dykes,” Justin Woods, a Greek Life intern at the university said.

“The tournament is for his kid, so he can have a college fund. But this year, we are giving all the money to Addison.”

The tournament will be held at Freedom Park and is open to all members of the community, ages 18 and over.

A men’s and women’s bracket is available for the tournament. Currently, there are more than 15 men’s teams registered for the event.

“I think it is real special when the college gets involved in the community,” Woods said.

“It is always good to know when your community is behind you. I feel like it is one of those things where we aren’t just here to go to college, but here to benefit the community.”

Teams can be added through the remainder of the week.

The cost is $200 per team and the winning team will receive a trophy and t-shirts.

Seacrist, who will throw out the first pitch to Saturday’s tournament, was diagnosed in September. Since then, various organizations have stepped up to help raise money for the family.

During the Valwood Valiants’ football state championship game in December, money was raised to help offset medical cost for the Seacrist family. Addison was an honorary captain for the state championship game against Westwood.

Through Saturday’s event, the Delta Chi fraternity is looking to raise more than $10,000.

Sponsorships are available to the event. Interested persons should contact Chip Bowen at (229) 325-9591 or Zach Dykes at (229) 834-8601.
