Blazers tie for fourth in Columbus

COLUMBUS — Chesley Gunn fired a four-under 67 in the final round of play to lead Valdosta State to a tie for fourth place at the AFLAC/Cougar Invitational, hosted by Columbus State at the par-71, 6,435-yard Green Island Country Club Tuesday.

Gunn and the Blazers entered Tuesday’s final round tied for seventh in the team standings with a seven-over 291 after the first round of play. The first round stretched from Monday into Tuesday morning after getting off to a delayed start due to rain, then being stopped due to darkness Monday evening.

The Blazers tallied the second-best round of the day on Tuesday, shooting an even-par 284, fueled by Gunn’s 67. The senior shot a one-over 36 on the front nine before blistering the back nine with a five-under 31. He finished second in the tournament with a four-under 138, but only after missing a 10-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole that would have tied him for individual medalist honors with Georgia Southwestern’s Craig Gibson, who shot a six-under 65 on Tuesday to finish at five-under with a 137.

Barry claimed team medalist honors with a seven-under 561, including a six-under 278 on Tuesday, while North Alabama, the first round leader, finished second with a three-over 571. Barton College was a stroke back with a four-over 572, followed by VSU and Lander, which tied for fourth at 575.

Valdosta State’s Will Repko shot a pair of 72s to complete the tournament in 25th place with a two-over-par 144, while Evan Hanna was two strokes behind and tied for 43rd. Chad Smith and Frederick Hildebrand tied for 64th overall with a pair of six-over 148s.

Valdosta State plays in the Indian Bayou Classic on Monday in Destin, Fla.
