STATESBORO — Georgia Southern’s third losing season in 28 years has cost head coach Chris Hatcher and his staff their jobs.
Georgia Southern athletic director Sam Baker announced on Saturday night that Hatcher’s contract will not be renewed next season. Baker said the search for Hatcher’s replacement will begin immediately.
Hatcher was 18-15 in his three years as Georgia Southern’s head coach, including a 5-6 record this year. The Eagles finished the season with a 13-6 win over The Citadel on Saturday.
Georgia Southern finished 6-5 last season.
The Eagles failed to win consecutive games this season, and had lost three straight games before Saturday’s win. They failed to reach the postseason for the fourth straight year.
Hatcher took over as Georgia Southern’s head coach in January 2007.
Before coming to Georgia Southern, Hatcher had a very successful tenure as Valdosta State’s head coach. In seven seasons at VSU, his teams went 76-12. Hatcher led the Blazers to a Division II national championship in 2004. That same year, he was chosen Division II’s National Coach of the Year by the American Football Coaches Association.
Hatcher was an assistant coach at the University of Central Florida and the University of Kentucky before returning to Valdosta State to become the head coach in 2000.
Hatcher had a stellar career as a quarterback for the Valdosta State Blazers. He set a number of school, conference and NCAA records, and won the Harlon Hill Trophy, given annually to the top football player in Division II, in 1994.
Hatcher was not available for comment.

VSU teams hosting summer camps
The national champion Valdosta State softball team will host two separate summer camps this summer, as well as weekly clinics throughout the summer.
The two summer camps will be held on June 11-13 and July 9-11 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The camps will cost $100 each. -

The David Dean Youth Football Camp is quickly approaching.
The fourth annual camp will be held May 29-June 1 at the Athletic Fieldhouse off Mary Street. -

All-American again
Go ahead and add another award to resume of this year’s Valdosta State softball team.
Between conference player of the week awards, a national player of the week award, All-Conference and All-Region honors and four All-American awards, the national champion Blazers had plenty of individuals honored for performances throughout the season, which ultimately led to VSU’s first ever softball national title. -

Monday, May 28, there will be a Memorial Day 5K, which will begin at 8 a.m. from the VECA School located on the corner of Azalea Drive and College Street. -

One of the top students in her class, and one of the top track and field competitors in the state, Jones will be taking her talents to the Division I level after she signed a track and field scholarship with Georgia Tech on Tuesday. -

Two Valdosta State baseball players have been named All-South Region while a third has garnered Academic All-Region, according to announcements made by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA), the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) and the Collegiate Sports Information Director's of America (CoSIDA) this week.
