VALDOSTA —
Valdosta State jumped out to an early lead on West Alabama and never looked back on the way to a 4-1 victory to improve to 13-2-2 on the season and 6-1-1 in the Gulf South Conference. West Alabama dropped to 6-8-3 on the season and 4-3-1 in GSC play.
Valdosta State is starting to hit its scoring stride, scoring three goals or more in consecutive matches.
The season’s leading scorer Rebecca Miller started the scoring late in the sixth minute when Abbi Edwards found her on a cross. Miller finished on the right side of the keeper for the first goal of the match and her sixth of the season.
Just two minutes later, Sydney Smith scored an unassisted goal for VSU, her second score of the season. She was alone in the middle of the box when she rifled the shot over the West Alabama keeper.
Halfway through the 12th minute, VSU took a commanding lead when Karly Lentz scored the second unassisted goal of the match. She corralled the ball in the middle of the box and finished for her first goal of the season.
After that, there was almost proof that everything was going VSU’s way when the Blazers’ next goal came on a West Alabama own goal off the head of a Tiger.
West Alabama finally jumped on the scoreboard in the 38th minute when Nicki Gears found Nicola Gibson for the team’s first goal of the match.
Neither team could score in the second half, but VSU continued to add pressure, finishing with 15 shots with 10 on goal.
Valdosta State will face No. 3 West Florida at 12:30 p.m. Sunday at the VSU Soccer Complex.
