BIRMINGHAM, Ala. —
Valdosta State was tabbed third in a preseason poll of all of the Gulf South Conference women’s basketball coaches Thursday. Meanwhile, Jasmine Mapp and Kamyia Smith were recognized as top newcomers in the GSC.
Despite going further into the NCAA Division II postseason than any other GSC team in 2012, the Lady Blazers were relegated to third in the preseason poll behind Alabama-Huntsville in the top spot, receiving five of a possible seven first place votes, and West Alabama, three of a possible seven first place votes.
After the Lady Blazers in third, Delta State, North Alabama, West Georgia, Christian Brothers and West Florida round out the group.
The Lady Blazers did not place a player on the Preseason All-GSC squad which includes UAH guard Jasmine Hammon and Jordan Smith, West Alabama guard Nikkia Jordan, UWA forward Brittany Weathers and Delta State guard Brooke Rhodes.
Valdosta State did, however, have two Lady Blazers recognized as top newcomers in the conference. Guard Kamyia Smith, a junior from St. Petersburg, Fla., who last played at St. Petersburg College, and guard/forward combo Jasmine Mapp, a freshman from Quitman.
The Lady Blazers will begin to get their chance to prove they belong higher than third in the GSC when their season starts Saturday, November 10, at 6 p.m. against Trinity Baptist.
