VALDOSTA — Blazer basketball picked to finish sixth in GSC

The Valdosta State Men's Basketball team has been selected to finish sixth in the Gulf South Conference this season, in a poll of the league coaches released Thursday.

The Blazers tallied two third-place votes, two fifth, one sixth and two seventh-place votes to finish with 20 points, which tied them with Delta State.

Defending conference champion Alabama-Huntsville garnered all seven first place votes for 49 votes to easily out-distance Christian Brothers, who garnered 36 votes. West Georgia was third with 30 points while West Alabama was a point behind in fourth.

North Alabama tallied 26 votes for fifth while West Florida followed VSU and Delta State with 14. Shorter and Union, who will compete in the GSC schedule this season, are not eligible for the conference championship and were not included in the poll.

Valdosta State opens its 2012-13 season on Saturday, November 10 when it hosts Point at 8 p.m. in The Complex.



Valwood JV wins 26-16

The Valwood junior varsity football team capped off an undefeated season Thursday with a 26-16 win over Windsor Academy. Sam Martin scored two rushing touchdowns and threw for another to lead the Valiants to the win. Martin scored on a 35-yard punt return, caught a screen pass from Hank Evans for a 52-yard score and then connected with Grayson Thomas on a 10-yard pass. Hank Evans added a 1-yard run for a touchdown to end the scoring. Ty Peterman kicked two extra points for the Valiants.

The Valiant defense was led by Ben Crump, Blake Holley, Miles Parramore, and Addison LeBoutllier. Grayson Thomas also had an interception  for the Valiant Defense.

    That wasn’t the case in the Late Model division, as Valdosta's Gene Ross drove to victory once again, but not without some close competition from Steven Roberts who came in second.
    In the Limited Late Model class, it was another win for Cole Exum, with Gene Maine finishing second in the NAPA Auto Parts special.

    The Blazers won their third South Region championship Saturday, beating Alabama-Huntsville 8-3 in game three of the best-of-three series at Steel’s Diamond at Blazer Park.
