VALDOSTA — Lowndes JV shuts out Packers

The Lowndes junior varsity football team pitched its first shutout of the season Thursday afternoon, beating Colquitt County 38-0.

Three Vikings scored on the ground. Jerone Daniels had a 1-yard touchdown run, Jaylon Wright scored on a 4-yard run and Ahman Brown had an 8-yard touchdown run.

In the passing game, quarterback Evan Folsom connected with Dyquan Wright for a 70-yard touchdown pass. Jeffrey Phillips scored the Vikings’ only defensive touchdown, returning a fumble 17 yards for Lowndes’ final touchdown of the game.

Sean Smith capped the scoring with a 32-yard field goal, He also made all five extra points.

Lowndes’ JV (2-0) hosts Valdosta next Thursday at Martin Stadium. Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m.



Valwood JV blanks Fullington

VALDOSTA — Valwood’s junior varsity football team shut out Fullington Academy 33-0 on Thursday.

Sam Martin rushed for two touchdowns for the Valiants, and returned a punt for another touchdown. Rajaez Mosley ran for a touchdown, and Colby Thomas picked off a pass and returned it for a score.

Valwood (1-0) hosts Crisp County next Thursday.



Open Bible beats Byne

VALDOSTA — Open Bible’s boys soccer team defeated Byne Christian 6-1 on Thursday. With the win, Open Bible is now 3-1 this season.

Colton Jenkins scored Open Bible’s first goal in the 31st minute, with an assist from Chandler Christians. The Warriors scored again three minutes later on a goal by Luke Hannon off of a pass from Jenkins. Open Bible led 2-0 at halftime.

In the second half, Hannon scored again in the 41st minute to give the Warriors a 3-0 lead. Byne scored in the 50th minute to cut that lead to 3-1.

Marlon Barrera added another goal on an assist from Hannon in the 53rd minute. Four minutes later, Barrera crossed the ball to Jenkins for Open Bible’s fifth goal. Jenkins then scored his third goal on a pass from Elijah Byrd in the 61st minute, for his second hat trick of the season.

Open Bible goalkeeper David Brandon had 18 saves.

Open Bible will travel to Cumming today to face Covenant Christian in a big region game at 4 p.m.



Echols County pounds Irwin

STATENVILLE — Echols County’s softball team defeated Irwin County 9-1 on Thursday.

Lindsey Levings went 3 for 3 and drove in three runs. Elizabeth Young and Christina Blair were both 2 for 3. Kameron Coggins was the winning pitcher.

Echols will travel to Telfair County on Tuesday.

    That wasn’t the case in the Late Model division, as Valdosta's Gene Ross drove to victory once again, but not without some close competition from Steven Roberts who came in second.
    In the Limited Late Model class, it was another win for Cole Exum, with Gene Maine finishing second in the NAPA Auto Parts special.

    For the third time in four years, and second in a row, Valdosta State’s softball team will play in the national championship tournament.
    The Blazers won their third South Region championship Saturday, beating Alabama-Huntsville 8-3 in game three of the best-of-three series at Steel’s Diamond at Blazer Park.
