VALDOSTA —
The Lowndes Vikette softball Invitational begins Friday at Freedom Park in North Valdosta.
Seven teams will participate in the two-day event hosted by the Lowndes softball team, including Lowndes, Valdosta, Cook and Echols County.
Thomas County Central, Jeff Davis and Tift County will also participate in the Invitational.
Among the teams participating, all but Valdosta have a winning record so far this season. Tift County is 12-1, Jeff Davis and Cook both sit with 11-4 records.
Thomas County Central is 10-6-1, Lowndes and Echols County are both 6-4 and Valdosta is 1-6-2.
Each team will play at least four games this weekend.
Three fields will be used at Freedom Park to host the tournament.
Play begins Friday at 4:30 p.m. and Saturday at 9 a.m.
Each game will be held to a 90-minute time limit to help keep the tournament on schedule. *The first games Friday will feature Lowndes taking on Jeff Davis on Field 1, Echols County facing Cook on Field 2 and Thomas County Central visiting Valdosta on Field 3.
Tift County joins the action Friday with a 6:30 p.m. game against Jeff Davis, while Cook takes on Thomas County Central. Lowndes and Valdosta will meet for the first-time this season at 6:30 p.m. on Field 3.
In Friday’s nightcap, Lowndes will face region foe Tift County and Echols County will meet Thomas County Central.
On Saturday, Cook and Valdosta will meet at 9 a.m. on Field 2, while Jeff Davis and Echols County meet for the first-time this season on Field 3.
At 11 a.m., Thomas County Central meets Tift County and Lowndes faces Echols County.
Lowndes faces Cook for the second-time this week with a game on Field 3 at 1:30 p.m., while Echols County faces Tift County and Jeff Davis meets Thomas County Central.
The Invitational concludes at 3:30 Saturday with two games. Cook faces Tift County and Jeff Davis faces Valdosta.

VSU softball wins South Region, headed to nationals
For the third time in four years, and second in a row, Valdosta State’s softball team will play in the national championship tournament.
The Blazers won their third South Region championship Saturday, beating Alabama-Huntsville 8-3 in game three of the best-of-three series at Steel’s Diamond at Blazer Park. -

Blazers lose to Delta State, fall to loser’s bracket
If the Valdosta State baseball team is going to win the South Region Tournament, the Blazers going to have to do it from the loser’s bracket.
The Blazers (33-17) dropped their first game of the tournament Thursday, falling to Delta State 4-2 at UT Baseball Stadium.
VSU will face Stillman College, which lost to No. 1 seed and tournament host Tampa Thursday, Friday at 11 a.m. to advance to the weekend portion of the tournament. The loser will be eliminated. -

The All-Region 1-AAAAAA soccer teams were announced Wednesday and Lowndes was well represented.
Lowndes coaches Chris Willis (girls) and Jordan Breit (boys) were named the Region Coaches of the Year, after leading the Lowndes teams to region championships and going undefeated in region play. -
