VALDOSTA — Two former champions sit atop the leaderboard at the Jack Oliver Invitational.
Sam Hogan has won the Jack Oliver Invitational three times, and Chesley Gunn is the tournament’s defending champion. The two former Valdosta State golfers share the lead at 142 heading into today’s final round at the Valdosta Country Club.
Hogan had the tournament’s best round on Saturday, shooting a six-under-par 66. He was one of just four golfers to shoot a round in the 60s. Gunn, who led after the first round, shot a two-under 70 on Saturday.
Chad Smith, another former Valdosta State golfer, is one stroke behind the leaders after shooting a 68 on Saturday. Tevis Upton is fourth at 145, three shots back.
David Hobby, a senior at Valwood School, shot a 68 on Saturday, and is currently fifth at 146. Ty Howze is sixth with a 147, Clint Smith and Clark Hendrick are tied for seventh at 149 and Nic Daugharty and Dale Parker are tied for ninth at 150.
While the golfers in the championship flight are playing a normal stroke play format, the golfers in the other flights are playing a Stableford format, where a bogey is worth one point, a par is worth two points, a birdie is worth four points and an eagle is worth five points, and the highest score wins.
Each golfer in flights 1-4 and the senior flight has a pre-determined number (based on their handicaps) subtracted from their on-course scores at the end of each round to give them their net scores.
Eric Saunders leads the first flight at plus-4, after recording a plus-5 on Saturday. Steve Seward and Mike Chapman are tied for second at plus-2. Seward had a plus-8 on Saturday. Bowen Hendrix is fourth at zero.
Russ Collett leads the second flight by nine points, with a plus-14. Collett carded a plus-7 in each of his first two rounds. Bob Baum is second with a plus-5, Dean Boruff is third with a plus-4 and Lee Redish is fourth at plus-3.
In the third flight, Jim Brown leads at plus-4. Charlie Watson is second with a plus-2, Greg Hunter is third at minus-5 and Bob Holliway is fourth at minus-6.
Britt Brantley leads the fourth flight at plus-6. Tom Warren is second at plus-3, followed by Jeff Duncan at minus-2 and Roger Onstott at minus-5.
Tom Getman is having a great tournament in the senior flight. Getman had a plus-15 on Saturday, and has a two-round score of plus-20.
Ed Trancygier is second at plus-5, followed by Bryant Martin (minus-1) and Jack Johnson (minus-2).
On Sunday, the golfers will play their final rounds on the Valdosta Country Club’s Plantation and Bottom courses.

Big win for Lady Blazers
Receiving little respect around the conference, region and nation, the Valdosta State women’s basketball team made a statement Thursday night.
The Lady Blazers put together an impressive defensive performance, mixed in with effective offense, to defeat the Alabama-Huntsville Lady Chargers, who entered the night tied for first place in the Gulf South Conference, 65-55. -
No. 6 Chargers rout Valdosta State, 87-65
The season-long struggles for the Valdosta State men’s basketball team hit an all-time high Thursday night, as the Blazers were blown out by sixth-ranked Alabama-Huntsville, 87-65 at the P.E. Complex.
“It was just a knockout punch from the beginning,” Valdosta State head coach Mike Helfer said. “Give (Alabama-Huntsville) a lot of credit for where they are. They are in the hunt for the league lead and they are a great program. They did what they had to do from the start, which was take control of the game.” -
Lowndes’ Chapman, Talmage named to all-star team
Lowndes softball players Ashley Chapman and Maiah Talmage have been chosen to play in the GACA All-Star Softball Showcase in June.
The GACA All-Star Softball Showcase is an annual softball game between top senior players from South Georgia and North Georgia. The game will be played on June 13 at Alto Park in Rome, Ga. -
Berrien, Cook, Lanier announce 2012 schedules
The Valdosta Daily Times has recently received the upcoming 2012 football schedules for the Cook Hornets, Berrien Rebels and Lanier County Bulldogs.
Lanier County kicks off regular season play Aug. 24 with a visit from Atkinson County. Cook and Berrien begin play on Aug. 31, when the Hornets host Worth County and the Rebels visit Calhoun. -
VLPRA group participates in Special Olympics
On the weekend of Jan. 20-22, 21 Special Olympic athletes from the Valdosta-Lowndes Parks and Recreation Authority traveled to Marietta to compete in the 2012 Special Olympics Georgia Winter Games.

Blazers fall to Albany State, 7-3
The Valdosta State baseball team was handed a third-straight loss Wednesday night, as the Blazers fell to in-state foe Albany State, 7-3.
The Blazers were held in check for much of the night, despite being aided by nine Golden Ram walks. With runners on base, the Blazers were unable to produce enough offense to score runs, leaving 12 runners stranded in the game. -
Wildcats rally for 50-40 win over Brooks
Valdosta’s boys basketball team came alive in the fourth quarter, and rallied for a 50-40 victory over Brooks County on Wednesday night.
