Lowndes’ girls cross country team finishes 10th at state

VALDOSTA — Led by a solid performance from senior Megan Charbeneau, the Lowndes girls cross country team finished 10th at the Class 6A State Cross Country Meet in Carrollton last weekend.

Charbeneau finished the 5K event 10th overall with a time of 20:16, while teammate Jacki Pinkerton finished 17th overall with a time of 20:41.

Alison Peters managed a 44th place finish with a time of 21:25. Alex Haun (104th overall) finished in 22:36.32, Ashley Powell (105th overall) finished in 22:36.92. Maggie-Laine Powell (122nd overall) finished at 23:02. Aubrey Suddarth (164th overall) finished the race in 24:44. As a team, Lowndes finished with 270 points.

State champion Brookwood finished with just 65 points (the top four finishers’ points are added up to make the team score). Walton finished second with 99 points, followed by Peachtree Ridge (144), Milton (147), Mill Creek (241), Lambert (259), Norcross (264) and Johns Creek (270).

The Valdosta girls finished 26th with 782 points. Samantha Kielma was the Lady Wildcats’ top finisher with a time of 23:98.

The Lowndes boys team finished in 23rd, while Valdosta finished 25th. Mill Creek won the state championship.

Jadon Long was the Vikings’ top finisher with a time of 18:00.61, coming in 67th overall. Eli Gilmore (100th overall) finished at 18:28, David Jones (120th overall) finished at 18:43, Tyler Thurman (150th overall) finished with a time of 19:12.

Freshman Chance Roe (166th overall) had a time of 19:27, while Walker Johnson (178th overall) finished in 19:44. Caleb Coil finished 183rd overall with a time of 19:58.

Austin Wallace was the top Valdosta finisher with a time of 18:34.

On the Class AA level, the Cook girls finished 24th. The Berrien boys team finished in 16th place out of the 32 total teams.

    That wasn’t the case in the Late Model division, as Valdosta's Gene Ross drove to victory once again, but not without some close competition from Steven Roberts who came in second.
    In the Limited Late Model class, it was another win for Cole Exum, with Gene Maine finishing second in the NAPA Auto Parts special.

    The Blazers won their third South Region championship Saturday, beating Alabama-Huntsville 8-3 in game three of the best-of-three series at Steel’s Diamond at Blazer Park.

    If the Valdosta State baseball team is going to win the South Region Tournament, the Blazers going to have to do it from the loser’s bracket.
    The Blazers (33-17) dropped their first game of the tournament Thursday, falling to Delta State 4-2 at UT Baseball Stadium.
    VSU will face Stillman College, which lost to No. 1 seed and tournament host Tampa Thursday, Friday at 11 a.m. to advance to the weekend portion of the tournament. The loser will be eliminated.
