ELLENTON —
Valdosta’s Gene Ross saw his four-race winning streak come to an end Saturday at Needmore Speedway.
Ross finished fourth in the Late Model Division, while Darrell Padgett of Jacksonville, Fla. finished first and collected a $500 check for the win.
Steven Roberts of Sylvester, in car No. 111, finished second and continued his streak of four consecutive races of finishing inside the top three. Kyle Bridges of Moultrie in the finished third and Ross placed fourth.
Altogether, seven different classes competed Saturday night at Needmore Speedway in Ellenton, a small town located inside Colquitt County.
In the Limited Late Model Division, Gene Maine of Valdosta collected his first win of the season in the No. 01 car, edging out Cole Exum, who has won three of the five feature races at Needmore this season. Cody Simons of Leesburg finished third in the No. 18 car.
In the Super Street Division, Michael Ford of Doerun continued his dominance by collecting his fifth consecutive win of the season and he remains undefeated this year. Zane Johnson of Moultrie finished second and Terry Redding of Hahira finished third.
In other races, Leon Childs of Slyvester won the Hobby Stock Division, Lee Wilkerson of Leesburg finished second and Ronnie Newsome of Lake Park finished third.
In the Enduro class, Daniel Thompson of Leesburg took first with Wesley Horne of Leesburg bringing home second and Cameron Connell of Omega rounded out the top three.
In the mini-stocks, Brett Roberts won his second consecutive feature while Peanut Gomez finishing second.
The ever popular Skeeter cars made their first appearance of the season with Walt Bazemore taking the pole in qualifying and going on to win the feature. Gene Maine finished second and Chris Davis finished third.

VSU softball wins South Region, headed to nationals
For the third time in four years, and second in a row, Valdosta State’s softball team will play in the national championship tournament.
The Blazers won their third South Region championship Saturday, beating Alabama-Huntsville 8-3 in game three of the best-of-three series at Steel’s Diamond at Blazer Park. -

Blazers lose to Delta State, fall to loser’s bracket
If the Valdosta State baseball team is going to win the South Region Tournament, the Blazers going to have to do it from the loser’s bracket.
The Blazers (33-17) dropped their first game of the tournament Thursday, falling to Delta State 4-2 at UT Baseball Stadium.
VSU will face Stillman College, which lost to No. 1 seed and tournament host Tampa Thursday, Friday at 11 a.m. to advance to the weekend portion of the tournament. The loser will be eliminated. -

The All-Region 1-AAAAAA soccer teams were announced Wednesday and Lowndes was well represented.
Lowndes coaches Chris Willis (girls) and Jordan Breit (boys) were named the Region Coaches of the Year, after leading the Lowndes teams to region championships and going undefeated in region play. -
