Winnersville Rivalry named best in Georgia by USA Today

VALDOSTA — The rivalry that ensues each season between crosstown rivals Lowndes and Valdosta truly is the best in the state.

After an online vote conducted by USA Today, the Winnersville Rivalry was named the top-rivalry in the state of Georgia, edging out Clinch County versus Wilcox County and Parkview versus Brookwood for the state’s top-honor.

The Winnersville     Rivalry is now one of 51 rivalries (one for each state and one in the District of Columbia) that will be compete for the honor of the top high school rivalry in the nation.

The nation’s top rivalry will be announced Dec. 19. The winning rivalry will be awarded $10,000 ($5,000 to each school) in an athletic funding. The schools will also receive national coverage of next year’s football game in the USA Today Sports Section, along with a specifically-designed trophy to be held by the rivalry’s winner each year going forward.

Fans can cast their vote for the Lowndes-Valdosta rivalry by visiting http://contest.usatodayhss.com. Voting began Wednesday and will be open through the end of next Wednesday, Dec. 12.

The Winnersville Rivalry was named the best in the state after voting began Nov. 19.

Lowndes and Valdosta began playing football in 1968. Valdosta leads the all-time series 34-17, although Lowndes has won 8 of the last 9 meetings. Lowndes beat Valdosta 17-14 this season, connecting on a game-winning 40-yard field goal as time expired.
