Vikings eighth, Wildcats 10th in preseason AP poll

VALDOSTA — The Georgia Prep Football Preseason Poll conducted by The Associated Press was released Tuesday.

All six Georgia High School Association classifications were ranked by AP member publications, including The Valdosta Daily Times.

In Class 6A, four teams from Region 1 are ranked inside the top 10. Colquitt County is ranked the highest among Region 1 teams at third. Camden County is ranked fourth, Lowndes is eighth and Valdosta is 10th.

Reigning Class AAAAA state champion Grayson is ranked first, followed by 2011 runner-up Walton.

Lassiter, Norcross and Hillgrove are ranked fifth through seventh. Brookwood is ranked ninth.

In Class AA, reigning state champion Calhoun is ranked first, followed by Lamar County. Fitzgerald is ranked third, followed by Cook in fourth. Brooks County is ranked sixth.

Other top-ranked teams throughout the state include: Eagles Landing Christian (A), Peach County (AAA), Sandy Creek and Burke County (AAAA) and Tucker (AAAAA).

The AP’s poll is one of two preseason polls conducted for high school football in the state. On Sunday, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution released its poll.

In Class 6A, Grayson is ranked first, followed by Colquitt County and Camden County. Lowndes is ranked sixth and Valdosta 10th, according to the AJC Poll.

In Class AA, Brooks County is ranked fourth and Cook is ranked sixth. Fitzgerald is ranked second.

The AJC preseason poll ranked 2011 state champion Savannah Christian the No. 1 team in Class A.

Other top-ranked teams include: Calhoun (AA), Peach County (AAA), Sandy Creek (AAAA) and Northside Warner Robins (AAAAA).

The high school football regular season begins Friday.

The newspapers who voted in this week’s AP poll are: Albany Herald, Augusta Chronicle, Columbus Ledger-Enquirer, Daily Citizen (Dalton), Times (Gainesville), Gwinnett Daily Post (Lawrenceville), Marietta Daily Journal, Telegraph (Macon), Savannah Morning News and The Valdosta Daily Times.
