VSU golf finishes third in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Valdosta State followed a first round 319 with a second round to finish third at the Las Vegas Desert Classic at the par 72, 7016 yard Revere Golf Club Lexington Course.

Valdosta State stood fourth after the first day of play, which was shortened from 36 to 18 holes due to winds that were reaching over 40 miles per hour. With the winds calmer during Monday's final round, VSU shot a 304 and finished the tournament 47 strokes over par at 623.

West Florida bested the Blazers by 12 strokes to claim the team championships while Midwestern State was 11 strokes in front of VSU in second. Indianapolis finished the tournament 10 strokes behind VSU for fourth while Tiffin shot a 635 for fifth. Host Missouri-St. Louis was a stroke behind Tiffin in sixth while Redlands tallied a 637 for seventh and Embry-Riddle Arizona had a 638 for eighth. Southeastern Oklahoma State was a stroke behind in ninth while Lewis-Clark State rounded out the top 10 at 644.

Southern Indiana shot a 646 for 11th and Illinois-Springfield was 12th at 657 while Lewis tallied a 660 for 13th. Quincy was four strokes behind in 14th and was followed by McKendree (677), Bellarmine (679), Jackson State (679) and the Lewis "B" team (697).

Nate Anderson paced Valdosta State as he finished tied for fifth with an eight over 152 while Abdul Sihag was four strokes behind and tied for 16th. Clarke Hendrick tallied a 157 for 24th and John Fordham shot a 158 for 29th while Drew McGuire finished at 164 to tie for 47th.

Valdosta State returns to action Monday, March 11 when it hosts the First Federal Southeastern Collegiate at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club.

The tournament will feature 36 holes on Monday followed by 18 holes on Tuesday, March 12 and is free to all spectators.
