A 75-year-old Atlanta man was convicted Thursday of murder and sentenced to life in prison in the fatal shooting of a tow truck driver.
A jury convicted Philmore Reed of murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony in the death of Travis Fenty, an employee of Quick Drop Towing, according to a news release from the Fulton County district attorney’s office. Superior Court Judge Jerry Baxter sentenced Reed to life plus five years in prison.
Fenty and a colleague were attempting to tow Reed’s unauthorized vehicles from a property on Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway when they spotted Reed on the rooftop of an adjacent building armed with a shotgun, the news release said. Reed ordered the two off of “his” property, authorities said, and Fenty responded that they had a court order to tow the vehicles from the parking lot.
Reed responded that they should have shown him the court order before touching his vehicles and opened fire, striking Fenty in the chest. He had been married for less than a year. His colleague wasn’t hurt.
Reed later surrendered to police who had surrounded the building, and told detectives, “With all this stuff going on about my property, I have no remorse.”
He had never owned the parking lot where the vehicles were parked, the news release said.
