Man hands out money to help others pay power bills

STOCKBRIDGE, Ga. — Georgia Power officials say a disabled veteran who was once homeless showed up at one of the utility’s offices and paid the power bills of 15 to 20 people standing in line.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports (http://bit.ly/VEWwQ7) that the man overheard a customer in the utility’s Stockbridge office saying he couldn’t afford his overdue bill earlier this week. Georgia Power officials say he walked over to the man and handed him about $230.

Georgia Power spokesman Brian Green said it was “a spontaneous thing” as the man handed cash to people waiting in line. Green said he paid one bill, then turned around and asked if anyone else needed their bill paid.

Green said the man handed out around $1,500.

The utility company did not reveal the man’s identity.
