SAVANNAH, Ga. —
Students in the Savannah area might be allowed to carry cell phones during school under a policy change being considered.
The Savannah Morning News reports (http://bit.ly/KI4XI9) that the Savannah-Chatham public school board plans to vote next month on a new technology policy. If approved, students would be allowed to bring cellphones, iPads and other technology to school for academic purposes.
Some parents have said they want their students to carry cell phones so they can reach them during school hours.
Others argue it could open the door to cheating and peer pressure and create disruptions.
Savannah-Chatham public school officials started enforcing a zero-tolerance for phones and electronic devices after a rash of bomb threats in 2007. Nine students were arrested for calling in 22 bomb threats while at school.
