WASHINGTON, D.C. —
Congressman Jack Kingston (R-GA) has been reappointed a senior member of the House Subcommittee on Defense Appropriations. The subcommittee provides funding for national security programs, the health and safety of troops and their families, and military operations overseas.
“As long as we have troops putting their lives on the line in the defense of this country, national security must be our top priority,” said Kingston. “As a member of this subcommittee, I have worked to defend important programs for our men and women in uniform while also identifying functions I think we can live without. Over the next two years, I hope we can continue our bipartisan efforts in that joint endeavor.”
“This subcommittee not only provides for our national security operations but it provides for the health and well-being of our servicemembers and their families,” he continued. “Representing four major military installations that house every service branch and countless military families, those programs are of special interest to me and I will work to make sure they are carried out efficiently and effectively.”
Kingston’s Coastal Georgia district is home to Fort Stewart, Hunter Army Airfield, Kingsbay Submarine Base, and Moody Air Force Base. It also hosts a National Guard Combat Readiness Training Center in Savannah, the Georgia Air National Guard’s 165th Airlift Wing, and the Townsend Bombing Range operated by the U.S. Marine Corps.
Last year, Kingston gained nationwide attention for an amendment he cosponsored with Congresswoman Betty McCollum (D-MN) to prohibit military sponsorships of professional sports teams such as the football, motor sports, or bass fishing. At the time, the military more than $80 million on the practice. In recent months, both the Army and Marine Corps have announced they intended to end sponsorships.
While the government is currently operating under a stop-gap spending measure known as a continuing resolution, the most recently House-passed Defense Appropriations Bill would have provided $605.8 billion for national defense and military programs. This includes ongoing military operations abroad, military personnel and pay, defense health and military family programs, operations and maintenance, research and development, and equipment procurement.
The subcommittee is chaired by Congressman C.W. Bill Young (R-FL).
