ADEL — A young Cook County band has been tapped as part of a nationwide vote to find a new Christian band.
Refuge is part of K-Love Christian Radio’s “Rock the Camp” contest. The Christian rock band’s original song, “Puppet Strings,” is among the nominees in the contest.
Refuge needs people to go to the Web site and vote for the group. Bands receiving the most fan votes move on to a second round to be judged and a winner named.
The winner will open for Christian music superstar Toby Mac, have a recording session, and perform on the Christian Ministry Cruise. Voters have a chance to win an iPod Touch.
Refuge is a group of Christian youth attending Cook High School. The band regularly performs Wednesday evenings at First Baptist Church, Adel.
Members are Amanda Gilbert, 17, keyboard; Amber Davis, 14, vocals; Meredith Beard, 16, vocals; Bradley Hines, 15, vocals and percussion; Austin Bloser, 16, guitar; Kyle Cortez, 15, bass guitar; Michael Hancock, 16, drums.
Refuge started more than a year ago when Hancock, who has played drums since the age of 9, wanted to form a Christian rock band.
“In October 2008, Michael got with his friend, Austin Bloser, who plays guitar and they started practicing in an extra bedroom in Michael’s house,” according to Refuge. “By November 2008, they had included friends Kyle, Amanda, Meredith, Amber and Refuge was official.”
Bradley Hines is the most recent addition to the group.
The band takes its name from Psalms 91:2: “I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in Him will I trust.”
In addition to the band, classes and church, members are involved in a variety of activities: sports such as baseball, basketball, tennis; the marching band; Beta, Anchor, Key and Y clubs.
Voting continues through the end of February. To vote for Refuge, visit http://rockthecamp.endavomedia.com/audio/81C0078ABB/puppet-strings.
