MetroOne to recognize emerging leaders in Valdosta

VALDOSTA — MetroOne, in partnership with the Valdosta-Lowndes County Chamber of Commerce, invites you to nominate dedicated and energetic young leaders for the Metro Valdosta Emerging Leader Award. The award will be given to the top-ranking young professionals in our community following a competitive selection process.

Emerging Leader selection will occur by an outside judging panel. Candidates will be judged on the following: Career Accomplishment, Professional Expertise, and Community and Charitable Involvement. Candidates must be employed as a full-time professional, including self-employment, in the Metro Valdosta area and fall within the MetroOne age range of 21-40. The candidate or their business must be a Chamber member. Visit the Chamber Web site, www.ValdostaChamber.com, and select Business Directory for a list of Chamber members. Candidates may be nominated or may nominate themselves. Visit www.MetroOneValdosta.com to nominate. All nominations must be submitted by July 28 at 5 p.m. Once nominated, an application will be sent to the nominee for completion and must be submitted by July 30. Announcement of the 2010 Metro Valdosta Emerging Leaders will occur in September at a reception in their honor at the Turner Center for the Arts.

John Trombetta of Valdosta State University, MetroOne co-chair stated, “The Metro Valdosta Emerging Leader award is in its second year. Last year’s winners are a testament to the talents of young professionals in this area. They are also a validation of the award itself. Each winner was deserving without question. The second year will be no different. I have no doubt that we will receive some excellent nominations. The judges will have their work cut out for them.”

MetroOne is a Valdosta-Lowndes County Chamber of Commerce initiative with the goal of attracting and retaining young professionals to the Metro Valdosta area.  Founded in September 2007, the group focuses on three key areas: Networking, Professional Development, and Business Support. Previous and ongoing MetroOne successes include Annual Young Professional Development Seminar, Progressive Dinners, Brainstorming Series, quarterly Lunch-n-Learns, regular networking opportunities and much more. MetroOne is open to all young professionals between the ages of 21 and 40. The format of MetroOne allows all individuals to utilize their unique talents in pursuing the common goal of making Metro Valdosta a young professional-friendly community.

  • 2 brothers sentenced to death in separate states

Rodney Berget lives in a single cell on South Dakota’s death row, rarely leaving the tiny room where he awaits execution for bludgeoning a prison guard to death with a pipe during an attempted escape.
For Berget’s immediate family, his fate is somewhat familiar. He is the second member of the clan to be sentenced to death. His older brother was convicted in 1987 of killing a man for his car. Roger Berget spent 13 years on Oklahoma’s death row until his execution in 2000 at age 39.
The Bergets are not the first pair of siblings to be condemned. Record books reveal at least three cases of brothers who conspired to commit crimes and both got the death penalty. But these two stand out because their crimes were separated by more than 600 miles and 25 years.
