Ga. group calls for inquiry into state prison

TRION, Ga. — The Atlanta-based Southern Center for Human Rights is calling for an inquiry into a northwest Georgia prison following the deaths of three inmates.

The Chattanooga Times Free Press (http://bit.ly/Ws2R4g ) reported Tuesday that a senior attorney for the organization signed a letter sent to Georgia Department of Corrections Commissioner Brian Owens, saying officials need to address the level of violence in the close security facility in Trion — about 40 miles south of Chattanooga, Tenn.

Two inmates were killed during fights on Jan. 18 and Dec. 26, and a third inmate was found dead while he was being held in protective custody on Dec. 22. Two corrections officers were stabbed Jan. 27 when inmates were supposed to be in their cells.

A call to the Department Corrections was not answered Tuesday.
