Man arrested after hit-and-run that killed officer

MCDONOUGH, Ga. — Authorities say they’ve arrested a suspect in a hit-and-run crash that killed an officer as he helped a stranded motorist south of Atlanta.

Henry County police say 43-year-old Ruben Marin-Garibay of Stockbridge was arrested Tuesday and charged with vehicular homicide, serious injury by vehicle, failure to maintain lane and hit and run.

At a Wednesday court hearing, a judge denied bond for Marin-Garibay, who remained jailed. Jail records do not indicate whether he has an attorney.

Police say Henry County Police officer Elgin Daniel was helping a stranded driver who had run out of gas when a Ford F-250 pickup truck slammed into him Monday night. Authorities say the truck also hit John Cook, a roadside service company employee who had stopped to help. Cook was recovering at a hospital.
