Resource fair on Saturday provides free tax preparation, more

VALDOSTA — The Communities Achieving Standards for Higher Living (C.A.$.H.) Prosperity Campaign has partnered with the City of Valdosta and several other agencies to offer a “Money Empowerment Day” Financial Resources Fair on Saturday, Jan. 29, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Valdosta-Lowndes County Parks and Recreation Authority facilities at 1901 N. Forrest St. The event is a collaborative of government and community agencies that have come together to develop, enhance, and promote local resources for the betterment of area youth and families. Attendees can expect to receive information from partnering organizations that bring awareness to these financial resources and provide them the tools to make the tough decisions needed to reach their financial goals.

Free income tax preparation is also available at the event through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program throughout Lowndes County and surrounding counties. With approximately 50 volunteers that have been trained and certified by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), free federal and state income tax preparation services will be offered for residents in Appling, Ben Hill, Berrien, Brantley, Brooks, Charlton, Clinch, Echols, Irwin, Lanier, Lowndes, Pierce, Tift, Thomas, Turner and Wayne counties.

In addition to the IRS and City of Valdosta, the C.A.$.H. Prosperity Campaign has partnered with other agencies such as the City of Offerman, Greater Valdosta United Way, Goodwill Industries of the Southern Rivers Inc., Coastal Plain Area EOA Inc., Lowndes Associated Ministries to People Inc., Lowndes/Valdosta Commission for Children & Youth and Valdosta-Lowndes Habitat for Humanity to bring the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (V.I.T.A.) program to Lowndes and surrounding counties.

  • 50 years on, fire still burns underneath Pa. town

It’s an anniversary the few remaining souls who live here won’t be celebrating.
Fifty years ago on Sunday, a fire at the town dump ignited an exposed coal seam, setting off a chain of events that eventually led to the demolition of nearly every building in Centralia — a whole community of 1,400 simply gone.
All these decades later, the Centralia fire still burns. It also maintains its grip on the popular imagination, drawing visitors from around the world who come to gawk at twisted, buckled Route 61, at the sulfurous steam rising intermittently from ground that’s warm to the touch, at the empty, lonely streets where nature has reclaimed what coal-industry money once built.
