Licenses pending for over 3,500 Ga. nurses

ATLANTA — A spokesman for the Georgia Secretary of State says licenses for more than 3,500 registered nurses have been placed on hold.

Georgia Secretary of State spokesman Jared Thomas says the licenses have been placed on hold because state officials have yet to receive documents necessary to renew them.

Georgia law was amended in 2011 to require applicants for state licenses to provide verifiable documents of U.S. citizenship or qualified alien status. Thomas says the holds don’t mean licenses have lapsed, are inactive or invalid.

State officials say renewal documentation must be postmarked by Feb. 8, and documents postmarked after that date will not be reviewed. He says nurses who send documents after the postmark deadline will be asked to complete a reinstatement process.
