McAlister's Deli giving away tea all day today

VALDOSTA — McAlister’s Deli is finding sweet ways for customers to beat the heat this summer by declaring today Free Tea Day.

From dishing fresh, seasonal menu items to hosting its first ever Tea Town Showdown, the quick-casual restaurant chain’s 2010 Beverage of Summer promotion, Tea Town USA, is its biggest to date. As McAlister’s declares today Free Tea Day, all participating nationwide restaurants will give away a 32-ounce cup of McAlister’s Famous Sweet Tea™ all day long, with no purchase necessary.

The promo pairs off with two of the deli’s freshest, seasonal menu items: Harvest Chicken Salad and Key Lime Pie.

“Summer is a time to celebrate the flavors of the season — and what better way than showcasing the freshest ingredients and the signature sweet tea that made us famous,” said Annica Kreider, vice president of marketing, McAlister’s Corp. “Free Tea Day is our way of giving back to our loyal customer base during the sweetest season of the year.”

  • 50 years on, fire still burns underneath Pa. town

It’s an anniversary the few remaining souls who live here won’t be celebrating.
Fifty years ago on Sunday, a fire at the town dump ignited an exposed coal seam, setting off a chain of events that eventually led to the demolition of nearly every building in Centralia — a whole community of 1,400 simply gone.
All these decades later, the Centralia fire still burns. It also maintains its grip on the popular imagination, drawing visitors from around the world who come to gawk at twisted, buckled Route 61, at the sulfurous steam rising intermittently from ground that’s warm to the touch, at the empty, lonely streets where nature has reclaimed what coal-industry money once built.
