DOUGLASVILLE, Ga. —
A suspicious fire that destroyed a former cotton mill in Douglasville is still smoldering, but authorities say rain has helped dampen the blaze.
Douglas County spokesman Wes Tallon says the fire was still burning on Sunday afternoon underneath rubble and debris at the former General Western Cotton Mill, which dates to 1897.
He says firefighters can’t launch an investigation into the cause of the fire until conditions are safer. That means they may not be able to inspect the site until Monday at the earliest.
Firefighters received a 911 call shortly after midnight on Saturday and arrived to find the building engulfed in flames. They decided to allow the dilapidated structure to burn itself out.
Tallon says some nearby roads remain closed, and residents are requested to stay away.
