LOWNDES COUNTY —
According to the Tallahassee Division of the National Weather Service, the Lowndes County area could experience 4-5 inches of rain over the next 24 hours. Steady rain is expected to fall throughout the day with heavier rain and declining conditions this afternoon and night. This being the case, citizens are encouraged to remain in place if possible. This evening, citizens are encouraged to stay in and avoid additional travel.
While significant flooding is not currently in the forecast, rising water levels are a concern. A flood warning was just issued for the Withlacoochee River with levels indicating a possible impact on Langdale Park. Lowndes County Emergency Management will continue to work with available resources over the next several days to monitor local river levels. Currently, the only area of immediate concern is Franks Creek Bridge, over Franks Creek. If water levels continue to rise, the bridge could be closed until water levels go down. Historically, flooding has not affected local roads and/or residences until water levels reach approximately 17 feet. While there is no cause for immediate concern, citizens are encouraged to remain aware of their surroundings. Under no circumstances should motorists travel across flooded roads, streets or bridges. Standing water may hide significant damage to the infrastructure underneath; take precaution and avoid flooded areas. Local road conditions are being closely monitored. Any closures will be announced immediately; please stay tuned to local media outlets. Lowndes County Emergency Management will utilize the CodeRed Emergency Notification system in the event emergency information is released.
