MACON, Ga. —
Authorities say two Albany men have been convicted of embezzlement of government property and aggravated identity theft.
U.S. Attorney’s officials say Dontreal Jenkins and Trevayne Jones were involved in a scheme between January and May of 2011 in which they stole United States Treasury checks. Authorities say they cashed the tax refund checks without the lawful authority of people the checks were issued to and embezzled about $700,000.
The men were charged in a five-count indictment and a sentencing date has not been set.
Officials say Jenkins has also been charged with conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud after fraudulently obtaining student loan money from the United States Department of Education.
A phone number for the men’s lawyers could not be located Monday night.
