Colony Bank sponsors the Quitman Camellia Show, with a public display, 1-5 p.m. today, Feb. 4, Dixie Community Center.
If planning to show a bloom, participants should arrive between 7-9:30 a.m. Awards will be given for locally grown camellias, according to organizers.
Exhibitors from four states are expected, showing anywhere from 1,000 to 1,500 blooms. The blooms can be grown outdoors or in greenhouses.
Quitman sponsored its first camellia show in 1935 and it continued through 1967.
The Quitman Camellia Show was revived last year when 750 blooms were displayed.
Known as the Camellia City of Georgia, Quitman has a rich history with the bloom.
Quitman was the home of Betty Sheffield, who is known for the Betty Sheffield Camellia; she grew this camellia from a seed. Her camellia has produced more than 40 “sports,” which is a different color flower that grows on the original plant. Gardeners take these sports and propagate them to create new varieties.
The Quitman/Brooks County Museum and Cultural Center has a bronze statue of Betty Sheffield.
