VALDOSTA —
Lowndes County investigators released the name today of a woman found dead in a residential pool Thursday.
Meanwhile, an autopsy to determine the cause of death will not take place until early next week, said Lowndes County Coroner Bill Watson.
A neighbor discovered Betty Welch, 60, dead Thursday afternoon in her Kelly Way residential pool, according to the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office.
Family efforts to reach Welch had been unsuccessful Thursday. A neighbor was contacted to check on Welch.
Both Lowndes County Sheriff Chris Prine and the coroner said Welch was an avid night swimmer. Watson said she regularly swam 20-25 laps per evening in the pool.
Given this information and the unsuccessful efforts to reach her during the day, it is possible Welch passed away the evening prior to her discovery Thursday afternoon.
No foul play is suspected in the case, according to the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office. Since Welch was in apparent good health, Watson said he requested an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Medical Examiner’s Office is scheduled to perform an autopsy early next week due to a backlog of cases throughout the state, Watson said.
