Peach State Summer Theatre’s opening of “The Sound of Music” may still be months away but auditions are this weekend for area young people to play the von Trapp children.
Interested children should be ready to sing a portion of a song of their own choice. Children should bring sheet music for this song; Peach State provides the accompanist, according to PSST!
Children will be asked to read from provided scripts. Children will be taught a short dance to perform during the audition.
For “The Sound of Music,” PSST! needs seven youngsters to play the von Trapp children — five females and two males, ranging in age from 4 or 5 to 16 or 17 years old. PSST! is also seeking a youngster to play the female role of Frederika in “A Little Night Music,” which will also be produced as one of Peach State’s three summer musicals.
A mandatory briefing will be held at the start of Sunday’s auditions. Headshots and resumes will also be collected from participants. Auditions begin after the briefing.
Auditioners must also present the memorized song and a short memorized monologue. Together, this presentation should last about two minutes.
PSST! is a professional acting theatre troupe that performs three musicals each summer in Sawyer Theatre located in Valdosta State University’s Fine Arts Building, corner of Oak and Brookwood.
A quick overview of the two shows needing children performers.
THE SOUND OF MUSIC: Arguably Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein’s most loved musical. It was also their last pairing as Hammerstein died less than a year after its Broadway debut. Based on the von Trapp family, this musical premiered on Broadway in 1959 then became the classic film starring Julie Andrews in 1965. The musical includes beloved songs such as “Edelweiss,” “My Favorite Things,” “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” “Do-Re-Mi,” and the title song. Opens June 1 and will run in rotating repertory on various dates through July 14.
A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC: Inspired by Ingmar Bergman’s “Smiles of a Summer Night,” Stephen Sondheim developed this musical which takes its English name from the German of Mozart’s Serenade No. 13 for strings in G major. The musical revolves around the relationships of several couples. It’s best known song is “Send in the Clowns.” “A Little Night Music” premiered on Broadway in 1973. Opens June 22 and runs in rotating repertory on various dates through July 14.
