Detours prepared for U.S. 84 overpass construction

VALDOSTA — VALDOSTA — The Georgia Department of Transportation has prepared detour routes starting Tuesday in conjunction with the construction of a railroad overpass bridge project on U.S. 84 in Valdosta.

Traffic using U.S. 84-West Hill Avenue in downtown Valdosta from South Ashley Street to St. Augustine Road will be directed to use the detour routes, allowing the contractor to begin construction on the new bridge. The detour routes for motorists and transfer trailer trucks should be used until completion of the project at the end of 2014.

“Opening these detour routes will greatly improve the time frame of construction on this project. We thank you for your patience as we work through the growing pains of roadway construction. Once the project is finished traffic flow will be greatly improved by the new bridge that will avert crossing a very busy railway,” concluded Jerry Hughes, DOT Area Engineer.

This construction project will build a 300-foot concrete bridge with retaining walls at the back of the sidewalk which will overpass the Norfolk Southern railroad crossing west of downtown Valdosta.

The project begins near West Street, extending 0.62 miles along existing U.S. 84, ending near Briggs Street. Frontage roads parallel to U.S. 84 will be constructed to provide access to local businesses and residents.

The detour routes will be signed as follows:

Detour Route: St. Augustine Road/Old Clyattville Road (C.R785), Gil Harbin Industrial Boulevard (C.R.662), Madison Highway (C.R. 1273), S. Patterson Street (S.R. 7BU).

Truck Detour: St. Augustine Road/Old Clyattville Road (C.R785), Gil Harbin Industrial Boulevard (C.R.662), Madison Highway (C.R. 1273), Inner Perimeter Road (S.R. 7/S.R. 31)

The Georgia DOT urges travelers to call 511 for updated information about this or any other construction project on interstates and state routes.

Georgia 511 is a free phone service that provides real-time traffic and travel information statewide, such as traffic conditions, incidents, lane closures, and delays due to inclement weather.
