VALDOSTA —
The entire nation will be watching this morning when Lowndes’ Josh Harvey-Clemons announces where he will play college football.
The state’s top unsigned prospect, who is rated as the No. 23 overall prospect by ESPN scouting services, will announce his decision at 9 a.m. in the new Lowndes Gymnasium. The signing will air live on ESPNU.
Clemons made four official visits during the recruiting process (Florida, Florida State, Georgia and Miami). On Tuesday night, Clemons said gave no answer when asked if he had narrowed his choice down to a final two.
The 6-foot, 5-inch Clemons may have given away his choice prematurely, though. When asked if he gave Florida head coach Will Muschamp any grief about being a one-time Bulldog, Clemons said “No, I haven’t yet.” He also said Florida State felt like home
No matter what Clemons decides, Twitter will be buzzing with the results, much like the social media website was on Tuesday night as local, regional and national recruiting services all featured Clemons in tweets.
If Clemons does sign with Georgia, he will be the only former Lowndes Viking on the roster, although in two years he could be joined by Matt Frazier, who will sign with Georgia Military College.
Running back Mike Moore will sign with Hutchinson Community College (Ks.), while James Mathis will sign with either Troy of Florida Atlantic. Long snapper Jayson Crum will sign with Valdosta State.
Several Lowndes players will wait to sign after the declared National Signing Day, as fullback Dee Daniels, quarterback Lance Jarriel, offensive lineman Stacey Wright and Jared Davis are all still considering options.
Valdosta will hold its signing day festivities at 9 a.m. in the school’s Performing Arts Center.
As signing day approaches, some of the Wildcats are still trying to decide which school to sign with. As many as seven Valdosta players could sign today.
The Wildcats’ lone Division I signing this year will be defensive end Michael Wakefield. Florida International is considered the favorite to sign Wakefield. He has also had offers from Troy, South Alabama and Alabama-Birmingham.
Middle linebacker Jonathan Hester has offers from Valdosta State, Cumberland and Point. Randy Cook, who has played linebacker and strong safety for the Wildcats, is expected to sign with Cumberland. Maurice Fason, another player who played both linebacker and defensive back at Valdosta, has offers from Cumberland, Point and LaGrange.
Left tackle Willie Barrett will either sign with St. Augustine’s College or Point University. Cornerback Terrance Foster is weighing his options, which include Valdosta State, Shorter, West Georgia and Point. Free safety Devontay Hamilton is trying to decide whether to accept an offer from Shorter.
At Lanier County, Junior Gnonkonde will officially sign with North Carolina, while offensive tackle Jeremy Daniels will sign with Valdosta State.
Travin Henry will be the lone Cook Hornet signing a college scholarship today, as 6-foot, 3-inch wide reciever has committed to Georgia Tech.
Clinch County’s Fred Tiller, who played wide reciever and defensive back for the Panthers in 2011, will officially sign with Kentucky, after he committed to the Wildcats in early Fall.

Blazers battle Mocs in Super Regionals
The top-ranked Valdosta State softball team will host the Florida Southern Mocs tonight at 6 p.m. in the first game of the South Super Regional.
The two teams will play again Saturday at 1 p.m., with the “if necessary” game being held Saturday at 3:30 p.m. No team has swept the Blazers in a doubleheader this season, making the outcome of tonight’s game even more important. -

Charging ahead
The Valdosta State softball team used a fifth inning grand slam by Marti Littlefield to pull away and beat arch-rival Alabama-Huntsville 9-4 on Day 2 of the South Region I Tournament Saturday afternoon at the VSU Softball Complex.
“It felt amazing,” said Littlefield. “I had been on her the whole game, and she had been sliding pitches and I finally just sat back and drove one.” -

Vikettes dominate
Lowndes hammered Westlake 8-0 in the first round of the Class AAAAA girls soccer playoffs on Wednesday at Martin Stadium.
The Vikettes scored two goals in the first four minutes, and never looked back. Seven different players scored for Lowndes on Wednesday. -
Vikings begin spring football practice
The Lowndes Vikings officially began spring football practice Monday.
The Vikings practiced for well over 2 1/2 hours in the 90-plus degree heat, and according to head coach Randy McPherson the day went well. -

To nobody’s surprise, the Valdosta State softball was selected as the top seed in the NCAA South Region, and host of the South Region I Tournament.
